My Ol' Dog Gus
My ol' dog Gus was the best friend I ever had. He followed me everywhere, slept by me, ate with me, and was my closest childhood companion. Gus was as much a family member as my brother and sisters. When Gus passed away after twelve years, my life was not the same. The day we cremated him, I felt a sad sense of closure.
Five years after this, my Great Aunt Grace passed away in her sleep. Our family loved her very much. My aunt was totally against over-spending for standard burials, and insisted on cremation for herself. Unfortunately, she made no pre-planning arrangements. Our family was appalled at her memorial service when we saw her remains sitting on the alter in a cheap plastic box. Aunt Grace was a woman of great dignity and beauty who certainly had the means for something worthy of her life. Our embarrassment from the urn left a lasting memory. This situation can happen to any family regardless of their financial standing if preparation is not made in advance.
